Exploring the Future of Journalism at the Media School Bayern
UncategorizedVisiting the Media School was an incredibly insightful experience. I walked away from that field trip having learnt so much about all the resources the school offers German and international students. The field trip was incredibly hands-on throughout the tour and it was refreshing to see such a healthy and inclusive work environment being fostered.
Media School Bayern is an institution that trains aspiring journalists in the different avenues of content creation. The school focuses on prioritizing media literacy, equality, and participation within democracy. Furthermore, the school partners with other media companies, educational institutions, and funding partners to make their mission possible. The school is filled with young adults learning the ins and outs of journalist creation in a space that fosters an open and creative atmosphere.
We started our tour off learning about the internship experiences offered to students. One aspect about this that really interested me was the flexibility the school gave prospective interns. The school seemed incredibly eager to educate aspiring journalists which immediately signaled to me that this school was devoted to educating students rather than simply being for profit.
Our tour, co-led by an adorable puppy, explored the different avenues the school used to create media. This included a radio station, twitch streaming room, and a room for live broadcasting. The grounds were filled with people who had a passion for media creation and there was no doubt in my mind that they thoroughly enjoyed what they were doing.
One aspect of the school that I found particularly interesting was the emphasis on the different types of media. The content the school creates is streamed across many online and broadcast platforms, allowing for students to understand different types of media and how they differ from one another. Different media avenues have different audiences, so what they school may create for YouTube will be completely different from the type of content they decide to create for TikTok. While the institution prioritizes informing individuals, they also include different types of content for the various audiences they hold across different platforms. While I already understood how target audiences differed depending on the media platform, this is the first time I’ve seen an emphasis put on differentiating the types of content created and how it is allocated to a certain site.
Overall, my experience at Media School Bayern was incredibly positive. The atmosphere immediately upon arrival was positive and inclusive. I truly believed this is an institution necessary for every country globally, as journalism is an important asset to every society. Their emphasis on informing youth and media literacy stood out to me and will definitely benefit the future of Bavarian media.
