When I used to picture a typical media company, I would imagine cubicles with massive computers, copious amounts of post-it notes, and uncomfortable desk chairs. The layout of the workspaces in places like the Media School and the Media Lab were such a shock to me. I appreciated the way they fostered an inclusive and open environment, which in return betters the content they produce. Such vibrant and exciting spaces are refreshing to see in a world that has become incredibly corporate. The emphasis on human connection and appreciation made me optimistic for my own future, that I might not have to spend it sitting in a crumbling desk chair.
Furthermore, I never gave much thought to newspapers. To me, the art of printing was dying, and I truly believed their consumption was extinct due to the rise of digital media. To see how each paper is made, all the thought and creativity that goes into printing a newspaper, was breathtaking. SZ Presshouse was one of the most fascinating trips I had ever experienced. After learning about the efforts put into a newspaper, I have developed a newfound appreciation for them.
Having experienced the world of media in Munich is not only something to benefit my resume, but to enhance my understanding of what it means to be a journalist today. A career I have aspired to have now has taken place before my eyes, and I lean into it with more passion than before. I have learnt about the significance of media not only during major world events, but also its importance in everyday life. Media not only informs but also shapes a society, giving them the resources to understand their home and the world to a deeper extent. The importance of media to me has never faltered, but these experiences I’ve gained have made it more real.
Media today has changed as a result of short form media, like TikTok and Instagram. I’ve since feared the loss of media literacy due to the fact that anyone can publish media without a second thought or verifying its legitimacy. To see companies like the Media School publishing on various platforms and committing to inform regardless of the current ways in which media is consumed put my mind at ease. I additionally gained appreciation for the fact that newspapers are still being consumed all throughout Germany, and that the citizens take their source credibility very seriously.
The course allowed me to not only gain more knowledge on media institutions, but allowed me to appreciate all the work that goes into informing the public. It was refreshing to see a society that put an emphasis on ensuring the information they consume is reliable and valid. I look forward to the day I can contribute to the world of media.
