The german experience

Authors

My name is Giulia, I’m from a small town located in the region of Trentino, in the north of italy.

All my life, all I ever heard about german is that it’s awful and hard to learn. I started learning it when I was six, and I have suffered all the 11 years in which I had to deal with it. The shift occured when I got a new german teacher in the third year of school, having her in class slowly made realize that I didn’t have a problem with the language itself, but with what it represented to me: a bunch of strict and incomprehensible grammar rules which I never really bothered to learn. With her though, I started not yet liking it, but sort of accepting it.

During the third year, I decided I wanted to go abroad for the fourth. The only dilemma was, where? Since I have always wanted to visit England and I kind of already knew how to speak the language, I initially figured that going there would be the best and most sensible choice. Though after thinking about it, something finally clicked in my head: I wanted to challenge myself with a fresh adventure, starting from scratch. That’s when I knew I wanted to go to Germany. And that’s what I did: I lived one year in Berlin.

Even if it was not easy, looking back I was glad I made that decision, but it was not enough. I wanted to improve my german and someday reach a level that I could be proud of, that’s why I jumped at the chance when I saw Munich in the possible Erasmus destinations.

I have always liked the idea of living abroad and this city is one of the best choices I could have made: it’s beautiful, full of green, so many new places to see and people to meet, while hopefully making some german friends along the way.

My hope for this semester abroad is to take my german skills to the next level. The main goal for now is to be able to actually understand what the teacher is saying during lesson, but I would like for the end of my stay to master every topic of conversation and to significantly improve my writing. Of course getting to know the city is my favorite part, alongside meeting people from different backgrounds. I haven’t got anything specific planned yet for the next few months, apart from a really exciting trip to Vienna during christmas time, which I heard should be great.

All in all, I’m ready to make the most of this chapter and truly live mu ultimate german experience.
