What do children know about sex?
Health . SocietyNecessity of sex education in schools is a controversial question. Many older people consider it inappropriate to speak about intimacy with children openly. However, does it really make sense?
I can speak for sure about my native country. Therefore, in Russia there is no sex education at basic obligatory schools at all. The system works as it used to be in the previous century: children will know about sex by themselves when time comes, there is nothing interesting about it and it is indecent to talk about this theme loudly. In my perception people with such a logic mix pornography and health issues. Let me explain.
No one wants to teach children at school the precise actions or exercises for having sex. The point is to get them conscious about basic biological processes and potential diseases, which come together with the aspect of contraception. I maintain that while this area stays taboo, it will lead only to psychological traumas in future, numbers` rocketing of illnesses, unwanted pregnancies and conflict between generations.
Moreover, I believe that the stated problem is common in the whole world. For instance, a new series “Sex education” on Netflix illustrates it really well. No matter Russia, UK, US, Germany or any other country… The truth is that sex awareness can relief many people’s anxieties and exclude delusions in the future. And the best time to start is already during school years. In addition, “Sex education” covers not only basic teenagers` themes, but also variety of genders, experiences in different ages, fake knowledges, fetishes and many other “uncomfortable” areas. Nowadays, changes in the world and perception of people are crucial, thus, in my opinion, it is high time to change ordinary way of talking (in fact NOT talking) about sex and follow the example from Netflix.
One more advantage of sex education at schools is that the information, with which pupils are provided, can be easily controlled and checked by qualified specialists. It means that there will be no need for children to rely on “word of mouth” in this complicated significant issue. Of course, it demands many resources (time, money, work of teacher and doctors) to develop a special universal programme for the subject. Additionally, it will take much time for people to get used to the idea completely and perceive sex studies in the same way as all other subjects. It is better to start with testing and volunteer agreement of parents.
To conclude, I really consider sex education to be essential. At the very beginning, it is not easy to establish the new subject, but at the end, it is worth it. Maybe we should consider its importance and help students to get necessary knowledges.
