Hi, it’s me
AuthorsHello, my name is Jakub Grim.
I study journalism and areal studies with a focus on Central Europe and Balkan. I come from the Czech Republic. I live and I have always lived in Prague. I usually tell people here that I am from Prague, because most people know it rather than the Czech Republic. Some people think that we still live in the Czechoslovakia. In the Czech Republic we speak Czech and the only other nation that understand us are the Slovaks. Some Czechs understand each other with Poles, but definitely not everyone.
Except the language, I think that I won’t have big problems in settling in Munich, because Bavaria is culturally very similar to the Czech Republic and Munich to Prague. There are far more cyclist, more trains, less trams and less historical buldings, but overall I don’t really feel like in an absolutely foreign country. Actually the only cultural schock that I experienced is the shops closure on Sundays. The Czech Republic is far less religious than Bavaria so our shops are open all year except of some holidays, but it is less than 10 days in whole year.
I chose Munich because I really wanted to go to Germany, because I want to learn German better. Plus I wanted to go to somewhere in the former GDR or Bavaria. That is because of my university field – central Europe. GDR and Bavaria are far more central European than e.g. Bremen or Hamburg. So I apply for studies in Munich, Potsdam and Chemnitz and was selected for the LMU.
I expect to learn German better, also to learn a different perspectives on certain e.g. communication or media problems.
I don’t really have any special plans for the next 3 months. I like football a lot so I would like to attend at least one football match in Munich. It don’t have to be exactly Bayern Munich, because I can imagine that to get the ticket is quite hard. I also like Munich 1860… that could be nice too.
I find this corona-time very tiring. It just lasts too long and we are almost starting to forget how was the life before 2020. One of the most frustrating aspects is the fact, that we all thought we can beat the coronavirus after the vaccination. Me myself, I am vaccinated for four month now and in the Czech Republic a fifth wave of the coronavirus is starting. At least we can now atttend some seminars and lectures in person.
That is I hope enough information about me…
