See you, Munich
Student life . TravelAfter this exchange semester in Munich, there are many aspects of the city that I am going to miss. The most prominent is the beautiful nature that is always close at hand. One of the reasons I wanted to go to Munich in the beginning was because it is a big city close to the Alps, and they certainly did not disappoint. In just a short train ride, you can find yourself in front of the mountains, where you can hike, ski, or just enjoy the view.
But it is not just the mountains that make Munich special. Cycling through the city on my rented bike a warm summer day is experiences I today look back at as adventures. Munich is a bike-friendly city with wide paths and beautiful routes that lead through green parks like the Englischer Garten and the Olympiapark. Whizzing along with the wind in your hair and the sun on your face, while passing people is something I will miss.
Another important part of Munich is the atmosphere of the biergartens. These traditional beer gardens are more than just places to enjoy a cold beer. These are large outdoor spaces that people of all ages use to have a good time with friends and family, and it does not resemble of anything I have seen elsewhere. I will miss the long tables filled with happy people, clinking glasses, and enjoying a schnitzel under the trees.
Trying to speak German daily has also been a significant and enjoyable part of my experience. Being immersed in the language has improved my confidence in speaking in German. Although, I am left with the thought that I wish I had practiced the language a little more.
It is certainly not the last time you have seen me in Munich. I am sure, I will come back to visit the city and maintain my German skills. Maybe sometime at Oktoberfest – who knows.
