Last Tuesday, my class and I hosted Felix Haselsteiner, a sport journalist from Süddeutsche Zeitung. It was a really interesting moment, he answered all our questions about journalism and his possible future. The Süddeutsche Zeitung is a private media and one of the most important daily newspaper of Germany.
The Süddeutsche Zeitung plays an important role in education.
In fact, they report information that not everyone knows and even if they read it on the internet they don’t know the context of the information. That is why newspapers are important, they help people understand the world without giving them opinions to refer to. In fact, the context is really important and with social media we lose a little bit the concept of journalism and news. Because we get all the information we want on social media but we don’t understand these information and we aren’t aware of the context in which this event or this pictures happened. Thus journalists play a really important role because they work the information they got by looking for the context, the story, the future of this information what it can bring to the people and other things. Thus, when Felix explained us what was his job about, he told us that through humour or good looking pictures or also fun pages, this newspaper is looking for touching another kind of public, a younger public. Because young people are really important for the future and need a better education via their way of learning information of the world and not only on social media for example. The Süddeutsche Zeitung is also the only one which has an entire page dedicated to finding love. This also attract the public because it is very funny to keep this way of finding love especially if it works which is the case.
However, I think that the Süddeutsche Zeitung should use recycling paper for their newspapers. In fact, every paper that they use to create all their newspaper they are selling should be recycled into new newspapers because a newspaper is not like a book, once you read it you won’t read it again and again and again. Because it is a newspaper that has an end. Every day is a new day and so every day new stories happened and are written on newspapers. Thus if they could take back their newspaper in order to recycle and reprocessing them it to become a new one would be eco-friendly and very better for the environment.
I really like the way this newspaper tries to entertain the public through their funny pages (finding love page) and through adding good looking pictures on their newspapers. Because it attracts people and it intrigues me. I like that newspapers are relevant and taken seriously intellectually but I also like the way, the SZ is still trying to change a little its way of working. For example Felix told us that to catch a bigger public he wrote with puns or amusing stories in sport field.
