The Theremin, the Planes and the Power of Communication
Excursions . UncategorizedMy experience at the Deutsches Museum was both interesting and unexpected. I began the field trip with relatively low expectations and even some confusion about how a museum focused on science and technology could relate to journalism. However, as the visit progressed, those doubts quickly disappeared.
We were guided by a friendly curator named Abina, whose passion for her work was immediately evident. Similar to the other field trip guides or in some ways, journalists, we encountered on our other field trips, she was deeply enthusiastic and engaging. It was clear that she genuinely enjoyed sharing the museum with us. Abina was also very accommodating and made a strong effort to connect each explanation back to journalism. For example, she drew our attention to the way information was communicated throughout the museum: large, bold text, clear explanatory panels next to exhibits and thoughtful use of layout and font size to guide audiences through complex ideas.
The museum itself covered an incredibly broad range of topics, including history, science, agriculture, music, and more. While there were certainly areas that interested me more than others, I found the sheer diversity of the exhibits impressive. One section that stood out in particular was the aviation area, where a significant amount of space was dedicated to aeroplane displays and exhibitions. The scale of this section highlighted how much emphasis the museum places on immersive storytelling through space and visual impact.

The most interesting part for me, however, was the theremin—an electronic musical instrument that produces sound through hand movements in the air. Watching and learning about such an unusual, touchless instrument was fascinating and memorable. The museum also featured several interactive areas designed for both adults and children, including laboratory-style spaces where children could experiment and learn through hands-on activities.

Overall, the visit was both educational and enjoyable. It encouraged me to appreciate different fields of knowledge and reflect on how complex information can be presented to audiences of all ages. Most importantly, it made me think more deeply about journalism itself—how information can be communicated creatively and effectively, and why professional, thoughtful communication plays such an important role in engaging the public.
