“I just want to try these Nürnberger sausages” or obesity in Germany
Authors . City life . Food . Health“Don`t worry, I also gained some weight here in Munich. Almost everyone does. You return home and everything will be okay”, – told me Natasha, a Russian girl who has lived in Munich already for 3 years. Meanwhile, obesity is a real problem in Germany, declared as a major issue by the federal government. Various estimates show that the percentage of overweight people in this country reach the amount of 60%. Here is an example showing particular data.
With a desire to find out the original cause of this fact and its real influence I have asked several of my friends about changes in their eating habits after moving to Munich. The questionnaire showed that 8 of 10 began to eat here more fried meet and drink at least one liter of beer per week. “But you always want to try local cuisine”, – continues Natasha, – “At first it was just beer with proper snacks. Then Münchner weiß sausages… And of course Nürnberger sausages and käsespätzle”. The fact is that this list can continue forever. So why do we usually cannot stop eating all this obviously unhealthy dishes?
There is always a complex of reasons. To begin with, walking through Christmas markets showed that almost every second tent offered something hot, fat and fried. During winter weather, it is the best way to refresh yourself, get some energy and feel a “true” German atmosphere. Moreover, the same thing happened to me one month earlier due to a very important holiday for Munich – Oktoberfest. It is hard not to buy special meet in bread which perfectly fits special sort of beer. “And how can you stay away while your friends are eating all these delicious things which are not provided in our home country. And besides there are not expensive at all”, – adds Natasha to the list of causes.
The thing is that it seems okay until we realize the real consequences of obesity, which include diabetes, different heart diseases, some types of cancer and stroke. You can find more information about actual risks and tips for getting healthier on the UK’s biggest health website. All in all, to avoid all of this people just need to begin to eat consciously via balancing a diet and do more physical activities.
A good thing is that the benefit of Munich is sporty lifestyle no matter of eating habits. It also has huge perfect green areas for it like English Garden. “That is why I am not so afraid of getting fat. In warm seasons I always enjoy riding my bike to Uni and hiking with friends”, – agreed Natasha. But is it enough? This question can be only answered by yourself. Hearing your body and “not living for eat, but eating for live”, – this gold basics can become the first motivation for changing a ration.
To conclude, it can be stated that Germany and especially Munich can provide you with all necessary unique junk food to have obesity. But if you are conscious enough, attentive to your health and know how to balance food with no categoricalness, Munich can also give you a wonderful sport experience and a big variety of gorgeous tastes without needless extravagance.
