Dream big for your dream job
AuthorsWhere do you see yourself in five years from now?
People ask this question pretty often, especially after high school, as if we know what we are going to do even in a week or so. There is a lot of pressure on knowing exactly what to do in the future, but what I believe is the main issue is that we can only be ONE thing when we answer that question. Why does it have to be that way? Why can’t one individuum answer “journalist, real estate agent and florist”?
Obviously, there are two different categories of people in this world, those who know what their dream job is five minutes after their birth and those who are continuously changing their minds. I would love to be the first type of person, and quite frankly I thought I was, but now, close to my 21st birthday, the more I live, the more I realise life is so full of options that I want to experiment all of them (or most of them).
Talking about potential carriers, there is one Ted talk that I listened to that I felt really close to my heart, the speaker is Emilie Wapnick and if you’re a fan of Ted talks you must have heard of her when she talked about the “multipotentialites”. (here’s the link to it, if you’re interested: https://www.ted.com/talks/emilie_wapnick_why_some_of_us_don_t_have_one_true_calling).
She basically talks about those people with many jobs over a lifetime, and many interlocking potentials, the said “multipotentialites”. It is the type of people who have many potential interests, that are able to cultivate an impressive amount of skills during lifetime, the type of people who are usually combined in businesses that skyrocket very easily.
In my opinion it is all about being flexible, being able to switch to another thing if necessary, especially in the fast world we are now living in. This is the main reason why I find it hard to have one dream job, because I don’t want to get bored easily, I’m afraid of that.
I was born in a family that loved culture and education, my mom was a teacher for a long time and she kind of transmitted this passion of hers to me. She always talks about how teaching is so fulfilling and that it changes lives if done in the correct way. In this job it is vital to build great relationships with the students and actually leave a good mark afterwards (and no, I am definitely not talking about school marks 😊). So this is one job I feel I could fit in and I would see myself doing.
Another carrier that is completely different from the teaching path is the diplomacy. I have always been interested in international relations, I am curious to understand how states communicate among each other, and I always felt like the cooperation path was right for me. It all started when I visited the UNO City in Vienna, that is where something moved me deeply and I knew I had to inform myself and study about those topics.
So far so good regarding dream jobs, the thing that passionates me the most though is travelling, getting in touch with new people, getting to know more about cultures that are completely different from the one I know. I think this is something everyone should do once in a while, I am firm believer that only the contact with others can help us become more aware and open-minded, and the REALISATION that not only we exist in this world is a huge step-forward in stopping the worse inequalities, such as racism for example.
Therefore, my dream job combines the continuous learning of cultures, travelling and trying to solve really important issues that still exist nowadays by educating since the young age.
Also, I believe that if your dreams are not big enough, why even bother? So we will see what the future brings to me in time, for now I will stay focused on the present, since the future is just a lot of “presents” put together!
