Deutches Museum: Communicating a Message

Culture . Excursions

I found our trip to Deutsches Museum unexpectedly enjoyable. The tour that we took was very different from what I had imagined. I assumed the tour was going to be about the technology that is used in the journalism field however I found the tour being about how the museum communicates messages to the public much more interesting. It gave me a new perspective to look at when in a museum and to have this tour in an actual museum where you could see what was being discussed. It was interesting to hear that separate departments set up each exhibition and that they are created by people who research in that topic. Each section of the museum has highly detailed in the introductory panels and object texts and it’s clear that they have been made by someone who is truly interested in this topic. Most exhibitions had some form of interactive element for visitors to use and often had special sections which were lower to the ground and catered to children. The building that the museum is in is huge and I felt that they used the space that they have very well. Half of the building was under construction, so the exhibit space was limited but the space that they were using was done very well. They used their very open multi-storey space to house their airplane exhibit which allowed them to hang the planes in the air as if they were flying. Our tour guide told us that in the music rooms sometimes the tour guides who were trained to would play the old pianos and organs which is another fun way this museum was inactive. Their internal rooms with no windows were used in parts as part of their musical instrument’s exhibition; in the more modern part of the exhibition, we were in a windowless room surrounded by instruments, mixing boards and other modern electric instruments which made it feel like we were in a recording studio. The Deutsches Museum is a well though out, fun and interactive museum which is curated and ran by people who really care about the topics on display and communicate their message clearly to the public.
