Media School Bayern
Excursions . MediaA Playground for the Next Generation of Media Talents
Walking into the office of Media School Bayern (MSB) for the first time, I was immediately struck by the vibrant atmosphere. The colorful decor and various posters, along with the committed ‘staff’ working on evening news, fostered a sense of freedom and innovation, perfectly embodying the school’s spirit without being noisy.
Our tour began with Mr. Andre Wengenroth, the spokesperson for MSB. Mr. Wengenroth guided us through the broadcasting studios and TV production sets, highlighting the resources available to its students, and answered every question in detail. We entered the radio room, closely observed the M94.5 radio show live, and chatted with the energetic DJ, whose regular job is a boat builder. This exemplifies the diverse opportunities MSB provides to individuals from various backgrounds.
A Unique Learning Environment
As an NGO, MSB does not face the pressure of ratings, as much of its funding comes from private corporate sponsorships. This support allows students to engage in various media experiments and creative expressions without typical commercial constraints. Of course, students also break free from purely theoretical teaching often found in traditional universities. Here, they are encouraged to engage in real-world projects, internships, and training from industry professionals, empowering them through hands-on learning. This commitment to practical experience is one of MSB’s standout features.
MSB opens doors for individuals from various backgrounds, including those who did not initially pursue media studies. This inclusivity ensures that everyone has the chance to develop their skills and gain practical experience. The boat builder turned DJ is a perfect example of how MSB facilitates career shifts and new beginnings.
Strong Network and Industry Connections
From my perspective, the most valuable aspect of MSB is the personal connections it fosters. The ‘faculty’ consists of seasoned professionals and academics who bring extensive experience and expertise to the field. Their guidance and mentorship are crucial in shaping students’ careers. Many of these professionals are MSB alumni who return to support the school and provide opportunities for current students. These alumni, now established in the industry, often offer internships, guest lectures, and networking opportunities. This strong network, coupled with MSB’s connections with leading media organizations in Germany and internationally, gives students a significant competitive edge in the job market.
Navigating New Media Challenges
In addition to offering learning opportunities to young people from non-media backgrounds, MSB collaborates with schools to provide teenagers with hands-on media experiences. This initiative helps cultivate media literacy and skills from a young age, preparing the next generation for the evolving media landscape.
When asked how MSB is adapting to the changes in the digital media era, whether VR and AR courses have been incorporated, and how he views the impact of AI, Mr. Wengenroth explained that although there is no specific timeline, he believes MSB will continue to evolve with industry changes. A decade ago, MSB focused primarily on radio, but now it has expanded to include podcasting, social media, and online native content. The school also encourages students to experiment with platforms like TikTok. This ongoing adaptation ensures that MSB stays relevant in the ever-changing digital media environment.
During my visit, I found Media School Bayern is more than just an educational institution; it’s a launchpad for future media talents. Everyone seemed dedicated and happy in this media playground, likely because they are doing what they love. The tools and technologies provided here lower the barriers to entering the media industry, making it more accessible and beneficial to society. Such a cool school, I wish my hometown had one too.
