Meeting with Jordi Orts: from journalism to intercultural communication
Culture . Germany . Interview . Spain . Student life
In the dynamic world of communication and journalism, there are figures who manage to transcend borders and turn their profession into a window to other cultures. One of these cases is that of Jordi Orts, a Valencian journalist based in Germany, whose career allows us to understand not only journalism in different contexts, but also the opportunities and challenges of starting a business abroad. In a fascinating conversation, Jordi shared his experience as a journalist, blogger and freelancer, comparing the communication models of Spain and Germany.
From the very beginning, Jordi made it clear that the differences between Spanish and German journalism go beyond language. “In Germany, journalism is more analytical and structured, with an emphasis on the rigor of data and the verification of sources. In Spain, on the other hand, there is more opinion and subjectivity in the news, with a greater weight of sensationalism,” he explained.
This German precision in information has also been transferred to the business world. “In Germany, the hierarchy is more marked and the treatment more formal. Planning and punctuality in messages are valued. In Spain, communication is more flexible and informal, which can be positive for creativity, but sometimes less efficient in decision-making.”
One of the most interesting topics of the talk was the challenge of being self-employed in Germany. Jordi, who has worked as a journalist and communication consultant, said that German bureaucracy is demanding but offers stability and protection. “Here the system is rigid, but in exchange there is more institutional support. In Spain, on the other hand, there is more flexibility, but less long-term security.”
His experience led him to diversify his career and take advantage of his knowledge of Munich to create ‘Muniqueando’, a reference blog about the city that over time evolved into a more ambitious tourism project: ‘Bayern a medida’. “It started as a personal blog, a way of sharing experiences, and today it is an agency that offers personalized trips through Bavaria,” he told us.
For those who dream of starting a business abroad, Jordi has clear advice: specialise and find a niche. “It is not enough to be a journalist, you have to differentiate yourself. It is also essential to understand the local culture and adapt your communication.”
Our conversation with Jordi Orts was a true learning experience about how communication changes according to the cultural context and how versatility is key to success in today’s world. His story is an example of adaptation, creativity and reinvention abroad, an inspiration for any student who aspires to cross borders and explore new professional horizons.
