Self Introduction – Divya

Uncategorized

Hi there! I’m S Divyadharshne, but you can call me Divya — most people do. At home, I’m Dharshne, and among my closest friends, I go by Tvya. I’m currently studying Information Systems in Singapore, where I’ve lived my entire life. Fast-paced, efficient, and always on the move — that’s the city I know like the back of my hand. But everything changed when I landed in Munich for my student exchange.

Before I dive into life here in Germany, let me rewind a little.

Last year was the first time I ever left the continent. I visited some of my closest friends in Australia — friends I met back in secondary school who are now studying medicine. Looking back, I definitely took those years for granted. We weren’t even in the same class, but every free minute was spent together, often laughing or practicing for our CCA (co-curricular activity). We initially got close through the Singapore Youth Festival, which was taken very seriously at my school. Hours of training and preparation brought us closer than we could’ve imagined, and I’ll always be thankful for how that time built lifelong friendships.

Speaking of CCAs, I was part of the Indian Cultural Society, specifically in the Indian Dance section. That’s where I was first introduced to Bharathanatyam — a classical Indian dance form — and I instantly fell in love with it. Dancing not only helped me connect more deeply with my culture and identity, but it also taught me discipline, resilience, and gave me a much-needed physical outlet. While I haven’t been able to keep up with it in recent years due to a hectic schedule, I know I’ll return to it someday. It’s a part of me now.

Another huge part of my life is food — and if you’re from Singapore, you’ll understand why. Our country is a melting pot of cultures, with Tamil, Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences woven into every aspect of daily life. The food scene is unmatched — bold, flavorful, and always accessible, no matter the hour. So yes, after spending nearly a month in Munich, I can confidently say: the thing I miss most is the food. While I’ve had the chance to try new cuisines here, the spices and authenticity of Singaporean dishes are hard to beat.

But Munich has surprised me in the best ways. Singapore is essentially one bustling city; skyscrapers, modern architecture, and a go-go-go mentality. Munich, on the other hand, has taught me to pause. To look up. To take in the beautiful, historic architecture around Marienplatz. To enjoy a simple walk, without rushing from one place to another. It’s shown me how to slow down and truly live in the moment.

To be honest, I didn’t know much about Munich before getting my placement. I chose it mainly because it’s one of the safer cities in Europe and perfectly located for travel. But it’s already become so much more than just a “safe choice.” It’s becoming a space where I rediscover myself — slowly, thoughtfully, and with a heart full of gratitude.

Very pretty Church I just happened to walk by 🙂
