Bayerischer Rundfunk: A balance between state funding and creative liberty

Excursions

I unfortunately was unable to attend the first field trip because of scheduling conflicts but I was interesting to hear everyone else experience on the field trip. The media system is different from Ireland which is understandable due to the size differences of the countries and our history. Ireland has two public service broadcasters, RTE and TG4. RTE is the main broadcaster, and its main language is English, and it broadcasts on television, radio and online. TG4 is broadcast exclusively in Irish, and it also broadcasts on television radio and online. It is important for the news to be delivered in both English and Irish to reach all communities and to preserve the Irish language since it only has a small population which speaks it every day. RTE is funded through the TV licence fee which every household in Ireland who has a TV or steams content must pay. While TG4 is funded through the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport. Bayerischer Rundfunk is a state funded broadcaster and is also funded through a fee that the public pay. Although it is state funded it is completely independent from the state and can broadcast whatever opinions it prefers and is allowed to criticise the state and the government. Considering the German history with free speech and state control, free speech and freedom of the media is an important right to maintain. It was interesting to hear from my fellow classmates about their experience in the Bayerischer Rundfunk. It sounded like the studios and facilities there were very impressive to see. It was good to know that most of their production was done in studio and that they create their own sound effects in studio for their radio. In the era of AI, it is nice to know that some studios are sticking to old methods of production which ultimately feel more authentic. Being a media student it is really encouraging to hear that a broadcast company can be state funded while also having the creative liberty to produce what they want!
