The Important Field of Science Communication
ExcursionsI was excited to hear from the Science Communication Lab because science communication is such a topical subject in the current climate of the world. Many scientific topics have become heavily politicised, and it is now harder than ever to get clear and concise scientific journalism. I was intrigued to hear how they have been attempting to deliver scientific information to different communities. I enjoyed hearing about the workshops, exhibitions and film screenings that they have put on to communicate various bits of research. Not only do these various methods reach multiple communities and peoples of different ages but they also make learning about science fun and interactive rather than people just being lectured on various science topics. Especially the workshops, which target communities and give them tools to improve their health and their community so they can all take care of each other. They also spoke about the various types of science communication that they do such as planetary health, denouncing harmful science communication, constructive communication and impactful science communication. I was curious about how they were dealing with harmful science communication and how they were not only protecting the public from the harmful rhetoric but also how they were helping the scientists. They explained how there is not much that they can do other than be honest; they talked about how sometimes saying they do know why something occurs rather than attempting to explain various theories. The only bit of science communication that I have engaged with in Ireland is Science Week. It takes place every November and puts on various events for people of all ages to communicate various scientific topics in a fun interactive way. Events like these and events put on by the Munich Science Communication Lab are unbelievably important in educating the public and these topics. Freedom of information for the public is an unbelievably important and it is important for media companies that they make this information accessible to the public and Munich Science Communication Lab are doing that very well.
